Recap of 2013

Okay, the new year is about a month old now and things have settled so much that I can have a cup of tea and reminisce about the past year. Looking back over 2013 I have to say that there are a bunch of outstanding things that happened and which I wouldn't have seen coming the prior year.

The year started out rather regularly - being snowed under with commission work, painting away at Space Marines (of several different colours and Chaos- and Pre-Heresy- variants) Chaos Daemons, another set of Dreadfleet, a bunch more Discworld figures, a Flames of War army, two titans.

Showcase: Reaver Titan

And here we got the finished Reaver Titan. It's a very satisfying sight I'm sure you will understand because quite a few hours of work went into this one. But dang it, is that thing impressive.

About time pictures of the finished Forgefiend showed up, right? Well, so here it is. Very fun model to work with. Way more pictures after the jump.

Review: Warlord Games Red Army infantry VS. Black Tree Design Red Army infantry

For the last article in the WW2 month-and-a-half series I would like to review not one but two miniatures packs. In the red corner we got Warlord Games' Red Army infantry, in the other red corner we got the Soviet rifle platoon by Black Tree Design.

First I will have a look at each of the sets seperately and then compare them next to each other.

Review: 28mm Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.C

I'm a highly irrational person with no sense of proportion or decency. This is why I got myself one of those "German 500 points" deals from Warlord Games for Christmas (despite already have some other WW2 figures at another scale). In regular terms this amounts to two infantry sections and five extra fellas, an MG42 medium machine gun team, a 81mm mortar team and a plastic Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.C, one of Warlord Games' plastic vehicles they recently released.

This is what I want to take a look at today.

Showcase: Western Desert Force reborn

....well, rebased really. But as soon as I got the little fellas on their new single bases the platoon felt differently. It's funny, as soon as a mini has it's own base I get the urge to not only make it a little more individual and neaten up the painting a little. This is what I did. Redid the skin on the models, some blacklining, slightly different colour to the webbing, some new shading and so on.

While I also got a platoon of 3" mortarts I kept those on their rectangular bases because it's not too likely that there will be 3" mortars on the table for now.

It's a full platoon: Lieutenant, Platoon Sergeant and platoon command including 2" mortar and Boys anti-tank rifle team, three rifle sections of ten each including a Bren gun team each, led by a Corporal and a Lance-Corporal each. Then there are six surplus dudes I can use as artillery observers, disembarked vehicle crews, additional troops, or what ever else the scenario reqires. They of course depict British troops in mid-1941. Basically a rifle platoon but i can turn them into a motor platoon easily (remove two guys from each rifle section mostly). The figures as all from Battlefront miniatures, 15mm scale.

Two of the rifle sections plus some support

...and the third platoon, platoon HQ and some additional guys who can represent a whole nuimber of things.

They of course are based for skirmish gaming, mainly with Force on Force and Chain of Command in mind. I played Force on Force WW2 with those models before but the multi-baases proved to be cumbersome and required additional bookkeeping with that set of rules and with the first test game of Chain of Command on the horizon rebasing the whole platoon made much more sense. It's a nice feeling to see the platoon ready for action now on their new bases and shiny new paintjob. Now all I need is some names for the officers. Any suggestions?

Don't forget that any WW2-themed painting/modelling project commissioned during all of December is -20% off! - Extended until January 17th!!

Review: 28mm Panzer IV Ausf. H

When I started the WW2 themed month, which now has become one-and-a-half months because there wasn't enough time to fit in all the content I had prepared and I want to give people time to take advantage of the -20% off on WW2 painting/modelling commissions, I asked around what people would like to see me review. One of the first answers was "TANK! Don't care what but TANK!" (quoting from memory here ;-) ).

WIP: Malcador Infernus

Hello guys, taking a quick break from the Raver titan, here's the last of the Nurgle war machines. Again WIP, about 9 hours to go until the deadline.

Believe it or not, I fell ill TWICE during working on these Nurgle models. Completely unrelated things too and usually I get ill maybe twice a year. I'll be happy to go on to painting something less infectious with supernatural, hellish diseases. Just kidding. I really enjoy working with these models. Doing new weathering things and such, always a pleasure.

WIP: Reaver titan size comparison

Hey, this is something a bit out of the ordinary but I felt like setting up a little size comparison shot between a Reaver titan, a Warhound titan, a Rhino and a tactical Space Marine.

It's a big boy, isn't he?
